Will Hunting is a genius who's living a rough life in South Boston, while being employed at a prestigious college in Boston, he's discovered by a Fields Medal winning Professor who eventually tries to get Will to turn his life around with the help of Sean Maguire, as Will begins to realize that there's more to himself then he thinks there is.

Director Gus Van Sant at one point asked Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to rewrite the script so that Chuckie is killed in a construction accident. Damon and Affleck protested, but reluctantly wrote the scene in. After Van Sant read it, he agreed that it was a terrible idea.

Do you have a soul mate?


Will:
Define that.


Sean:
Someone you can relate to, someone who opens things up for you.


Will:
Sure, I got plenty.


Sean:
Well, name them.


Will:
Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Frost, O'Conner...


Sean:
Well that's great. They're all dead.


Will:
Not to me, they're not.


Sean:
You can't have a lot of dialogue with them.


Will:
Not without a heater and some serious smelling salts.

Continuity: The chalkboards in the first classroom scene raise and lower by themselves a couple of times.
