With their father away fighting in the Civil War, Joe, Meg, Beth and Amy grow up with their mother in somewhat reduced circumstances. They are a close family who inevitably have their squabbles and tragedies. But the bond holds even when, later, men friends start to become a part of the household.

Christina Ricci auditioned for the part of young Amy, but the part went to Kirsten Dunst.

Amy:
He put snow on your ankle? With his own hands?


Marmee:
I won't have my girls being silly about boys. To bed! Jo dear.


Amy:
Everything lovely happens to Meg.


Meg:
[Sarcastically] Oh yes, indeed.

Continuity: When Laurie spots Amy painting in Europe, he drops his cigarette twice.
