In Mississippi, the former blues man Lazarus is in crisis, missing his wife that has just left him. He finds the town slut and nymphomaniac Rae dumped on the road nearby his little farm, drugged, beaten and almost dead. Lazarus brings her home, giving medicine and nursing and nourishing her like a father, keeping her chained to control her heat. When her boyfriend Ronnie is discharged from the army due to his anxiety issue, he misunderstands the relationship of Lazarus and Rae, and tries to kill him.

Cedric Burnside and Kenny Brown, the members of Lazarus' band, are the grandchildren of legendary (but relatively unknown) blues singer R.L. Burnside. They played in his band while he toured up until his death in 2005. Additionally, the reverend (played by John Cothran Jr.) is named R.L. On a side note, features of Lazarus (played by Samuel L. Jackson), such as his hair and his history with the Juke Joint, are remarkably similar to Burnside's.

Lazarus:
I ain't gonn' be moved on this. Right or wrong, you gonn' mind me. Like Jesus Christ said, "Imma suffa' you. IMMA SUFFA' YOU!" Get yo ass back in my house!


Rae:
Or what? Or what?

[spits in Lazarus' face]

Continuity: The shape and location of the scar on Lazarus's right shoulder changes several times through out the film.
