Movie Plot

Kate and John Coleman are rebuilding their troubled marriage. Kate had a drinking problem, but is in therapy and is doing well. She has been sober for one year. The couple decides to adopt a child. When they meet the nine-year-old Estonian girl, Esther, at the St. Marina Orphanage, they immediately fall in love with the well-educated orphan. Their young son, Daniel, is hostile to his new sister; but their deaf-mute daughter, little Max, is enchanted with her - at first. Eventually, Kate begins to feel that Esther is manipulative and possibly even psychologically disturbed. John refuses to listen to his wife's misgivings, and the wounds in their marriage reopen. Kate calls Sister Abigail at the orphanage, and the nun informs her that Esther has a troubled and mysterious history. Kate delves further into Esther's past and discovers she is not at all who she pretends to be.

Trivia

Warner Bros. edited the film's trailer to remove Esther's line "It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own" after receiving numerous complaints from adoptive parents and foster care organizations.

Quotes

Esther:
I like it when it's just the two of us. You don't know how long I've waited for a daddy just like you.

John Coleman:
Mommy too, right?

Esther:
I don't think Mommy likes me very much.

John Coleman:
Hey. That's not true, Mommy loves you.

Esther:
It's all right. It must be hard to love an adopted child as much as your own.

John Coleman:
Sweetheart, you're just as much part of this family as Danny and Max, okay? Why don't you do something nice for Mommy, show her how much you love her?

Esther:
That's a wonderful idea.

Really really great story idea.. I mean.. it ought to be some reasons behind the horror and the story of this film didn't make it ridiculous as some may do. Well, I just so agree with hel_likespopcorn!! ^__^

Well, this movie has made me out of breath! I love the story anyway. So unpredictable and so tragic..

I can't tell more words for this movie although there are plenty of words that I wanna say about this movie. I am speechless!
well..I believe that every movie has the own best scene and for me the best scene is when Esther made up herself like a woman. Adult woman. I love her bitchy expression and the way she kissed John on his neck. ohhh.....she's still a girl and she's successfully makes me think that she has that kinda disorder in her trully life!haha..
and another thing that makes me so much in love with her is when she threatened daniel in his room and said "do you piss on yourself?"..
oohhhhhh gosssshhhhhh....I can say..she's a really good actress!she could show her cruel side, desire to kill and disgusting expression at the SAME TIME WITHOUT LOSING her innocent face.

well..Issabelle..you can be the craziest actress after Helena Bonham Carter..who knows??

How do we recommend titles?

With more than a million titles, it isn't feasible to handpick recommendations for every film. That's why we came up with a formula to suggest titles that fit along with the selected one. The formula uses factors such as user votes, genre and keywords to generate an automatic response. The system produces relevant results most of the time but since recommended titles are not manually chosen, occasionally they may include less than perfect matches.
