Based on the 1981 Broadway musical comes Dreamgirls, a story of greed, tough hate, and romance. Three young women - Deena Jones, Effie White, and Lorrell Robinson - desire to become pop stars and get their wish when they're picked to be backup singers for the legendary James "Thunder" Early. Then they're set free for leads, but Curtis Taylor and Effie's brother C.C. decide for Deena to be lead which upsets Effie.

Loretta Devine, who plays the jazz singer in the wake scene, created the role of Lorrell Robinson in the original Broadway production of "Dreamgirls" in 1981. Actor Hinton Battle, who plays Curtis' aide Wayne, was also a replacement for the role of James "Thunder" Early in the original production.

Lorrell Robinson:
[as Early is kissing her] That feels nice... I mean it feels funny! You're married, aren't you?


James 'Thunder' Early:
Everybody knows Jimmy's married, baby.


Lorrell Robinson:
Well, then, you get your married hands off!

Anachronisms: The Dreams' success montage includes a picture of the trio standing on the Great Wall of China. The U.S. and China had no diplomatic relations from 1949 to 1971.
