The year is 1991,it is two years since the events of Vigo plagued NYC.Now the Ghostbusters are going strong and looking to franchise out the business. You play as a new recruit in Ghostbusters International,and just as you get started with GBI an ancient evil descends upon NYC and a few familiar faces show back up.

The game's plot line of the Ghostbusters starting a franchise so that there will be other teams of Ghostbusters across the world ties into Dan Aykroyd's original concept for the Ghostbusters. When he first pitched the script for the first film in the early 1980's, his original idea was that the film would be set in the future and that there would be teams of Ghostbusters just as there are units of fire fighters and paramedics.

Anachronisms: The Ecto can be seen with the yellow New York license plates. The yellow plates were only used between 1973 and 1986. By 1991, New York was using the white liberty plates. (While the Ecto-1A in Ghostbusters 2 was Blue and White, this makes the Ecto-1B license plate in the Xbox version of the game somewhat confusing. In the Wii version it's just the Ecto-1 with no b afterward. All other cars in the Time's Square portion of the game are Blue/White. This means the Orange/Blue background of Ecto-1B plates was intentional. The only conclusion to which one can come is the plates are Vanity plates, or a private wink and nod to the first movie. So it maybe a mistake or an intentional alteration "for the fans".)
