Arie Verveen Biography
Arie Verveen resides on and off in Ireland. He is working on season three of "Sons of Anarchy" (2008) and recently starred in four independent film productions, Boiler Maker (2008) with John Savage, Across the Hall (2009) with Brittany Murphy, No Fury (2009) (V) directed by Andy Roski and Dead Bones (2008) for Swiss director Olivier Beguin. Prior to that he shot the pilot Suspect (2007) (TV) for director Guy Ritchie and has also guest starred in pivotal roles on several TV shows. He has received an Independent Spirit Award Nomination, a Golden Satellite Award, and notable critical acclaim, for his performances. Arie first experimented with the idea of acting while living in London Town. He was intrigued by Tennessee Williams plays, such as 'Orpheus Descending', 'Camino Real' and 'Talk To Me Like The Rain And Let Me Listen'... Verveen's London stage debut was a production of 'A Hatful Of Rain' by Michael V. Gazzo which he co-produced and starred in. Shortly thereafter he visited New York City with film in mind. After contributing time at the famed Actors Studio on a volunteer basis he was asked to take over the day to day running of the Studio. He committed to this position for a six month period assisting Arthur Penn. During this period he also contributed to several student and independent films. Fulfillment of his Actors Studio commitment coincided with being cast in Caught (1996), his first lead role in a feature film, opposite Edward James Olmos and Maria Conchita Alonso and directed by Robert M. Young. He was directed by Terrence Malick in The Thin Red Line (1998) alongside Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, Woody Harrelson and John Cusack among others. Verveen then received a hand written note from renowned Russian director Sergey Bodrov, (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007)), inviting him to appear in Running Free (1999) a Sony/Columbia Picture. The note simply read, "It's a story of the horse, it's Africa, Namibia, a really great place. Think about it!" He didn't have to, being always drawn to explore diverse, interesting places and material. He followed these movies with a run of independent films, several by first time directors. The Journeyman (2001), a spaghetti western with Willie Nelson and Barry Corbin. Opposite Dominique Swain and Henry Thomas in 'Plain Dirty', aka Briar Patch (2003) produced by Lauren Moews. A portrayal of Edgar Allan Poe in Descendant (2003) and younger brother to Gary Oldman in 'Sin' (2003/1). Arie then opened up the highly successful Cabin Fever (2002) portraying the bloody disease spreading Hermit, a Lion's Gate's release, directed by Eli Roth and also produced by Lauren Moews. In Sin City (2005), an adaptation of the graphic novel by 'Frank Miller' based in the fictional town of Sin City, Arie was co-directed by 'Robert Rodriguez' and Frank Miller. Here he returned to his Irish roots on film for the first time and played Murphy, leader of the Irish Mercenaries 28.9.76.
