While building a career as a writer, Bernhardt supported himself as an actor, with contract roles on General Hospital (1986-1988), then Dynasty (1989-1990), followed by numerous bad guy leads in films such as Clive Barker's Hellraiser. He has a Masters in Economics.Since the mid-nineties, Bernhardt has had over 20 screenplays produced, ranging from the low-budgeted The Immortals to studio-fare such as the latest Rambo. His work has attracted diverse talent, ranging from Stallone, Snipes, and Swayze to Chris Rock and Charlie Sheen.Bernhardt has several projects in active development, including an adaptation of the John Case bestseller The Genesis Code - with Brad Anderson (The Machinist) to direct, The Ottoman - with Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth) to direct, Shi - an adaptation of the best selling comic book with Constantin financing and Patrick Tatopoulos to direct (Underworld), and Blue-Eyed Samurai - with Marcel Langenegger to direct (Deception).
