Before Joseph Cotten became a movie actor, he worked in advertising, as a theatre critic and began acting on stage. He got his chance at the movies due his friendship with Orson Welles, which began with their time at the Federal Theatre in 1936 and lasted until Welles death. He is probably best remembered from roles of Jed Leland in Citizen Kane (1941), Holly Martens in The Third Man (1949) or the coolly evil Uncle Charlie in Alfred Hitchcock 's Shadow of a Doubt (1943). He teamed again with Thereas Wright, whom he co starred with 9 years earlier, to star in "The Steel Trap" (1952). He reunited with Alfred Hitchcock to star on 3 episodes of the acclaimed TV series "Alfred Hitchcok Presents" (1955-59). In the Episode "Breakdown", he portrays a man who survived an auto accident but is believed, by his appearance, to be dead. He stared in his own TV series "The Joseph Cotton Show- On Trial" (1956). He later played numerous major and minor parts and after 1967, had various appearances in TV and on the big screen . His last role was as a priest in the feature "The Survivor" (1981).
