Former major-leaguer Tony Micelli and his daughter Samantha arrive at the Connecticut household of executive Angela Bower, where Tony has taken a job as live-in housekeeper. The Bowers are an interesting family, to say the least. Angela is uptight and obsessed with her work. Her son Jonathan is shy and lacks self-esteem, and her mother, Mona, is a man-hungry vixen. Tony soon wins them over with his laid back style, and the Bowers soon begin to loosen up. Over time, romantic tensions begin to surface between Angela and Tony, and we see the children grow up.

ABC originally planned to cancel the show at the end of the seventh season but that the producers were able to convince the network to renew the show for an eighth season. As part of the deal to renew the show (and to revive fan interest) it was decided to base the entire eight season around Tony and Angela finally becoming a couple. When ratings for the eighth season failed to increase, the show was cancelled.

Tony:
I'm Tony Micelli. I'm here about the job.


Angela:
Oh, I'm sorry. There must be a mistake. This job is for a housekeeper.


Tony:
That's me, Mr. Goodmop!


Angela:
Well, my mother's screening everyone. Did you meet her?


Tony:
Yeah yesterday. She gave me the once over, kicked me in the tires, put me up on the rack...


Angela:
Well, she should've checked under your hood, 'cause you're the wrong sex.


Tony:
Oh, wait a minute; she said that wouldn't be any problem.


Angela:
My mother didn't think World War II was a problem.
